The site's name derives from a long-running internet joke that a man who reaches the age of thirty without sexual experience becomes a 'wizard' and gains magical powers. In practice it has functioned as a community for users dealing with isolation, depression, and social withdrawal.

Boards on Wizardchan cover hobbies, video games, music, and mental health. The site explicitly forbids discussion of dating advice or 'self-improvement' framed as a path to relationships, distinguishing it from broader 'incel' communities that share some demographic overlap.
