Safebooru is a worksafe anime image archive founded in 2010 that provides filtered access to the Gelbooru tag ecosystem. It applies the booru model with a strict content rating restriction, admitting only images classified as safe, which makes it usable in contexts where other boorus are not.
The Rating System
Boorus classify images on a three-level content rating scale, conventionally safe, questionable and explicit. The rating is applied as a required piece of metadata alongside descriptive tags, and it is one of the few fields that functions as a genuine taxonomy rather than a folksonomy.
Safe denotes images with no sexual content. Questionable covers suggestive material falling short of explicit depiction. Explicit covers the remainder.

The site is also a useful illustration of how metadata quality compounds. Danbooru's contributors were building a search index, not a filtering system, but the rigour they applied made filtering possible, and the same metadata subsequently proved valuable for purposes nobody had considered. In each case the value comes from the guarantee at the domain level rather than from any capability the parent site lacks.
Design Lessons from Layered Filtering
The Safebooru arrangement demonstrates a design pattern with wider applicability: maintain one comprehensive archive and derive restricted views from it, rather than curating a single archive toward the most restrictive audience.
The alternative approaches both fail. A single archive moderated to the strictest standard loses everything that standard excludes, permanently. A single archive with no restriction is unusable for a large share of potential users.
Derived views resolve this, but only if the underlying metadata is good enough to support them. The filter is only as reliable as the ratings, which means the pattern depends entirely on the archive having invested in consistent classification.
This is a useful observation beyond boorus. Content classification is often treated as a moderation overhead; here it is the infrastructure that makes multiple audiences serviceable from one corpus.
It is worth being precise about what the site guarantees. The filter is a rating filter, applied to a specific category of content, maintained by volunteers and subject to human error. It is a substantial improvement over unfiltered access and it is not a certification, and institutional users in particular should size their expectations accordingly.
