iichan / 0chan

From Chan Top List, the imageboard wiki.

iichan and 0chan were among the earliest non-Japanese imageboards inspired by Futaba Channel. iichan, originally launched as 'wakaba' in 2004, ran on the Wakaba imageboard script written by !WAHa.06x36 and emphasized anime and Japanese culture in English. 0chan was a contemporaneous Russian-language imageboard that helped seed the large Russian 'chan' ecosystem of the 2000s.

Wakaba script

The Wakaba script that powered iichan was an open-source Perl rewrite of Futallaby. It became the foundation for many subsequent imageboards and influenced the design of later PHP-based scripts such as Kusaba and TinyIB.

Legacy

Although both sites are now largely defunct, they served as proving grounds for the imageboard format outside Japan and trained an entire generation of administrators who later founded successor sites.
