Anonymous (collective)

From Chan Top List, the imageboard wiki.

Anonymous is the collective name adopted by a loosely organized international hacktivist movement that emerged from 4chan and other imageboards in the late 2000s. The name originates in the default username 'Anonymous' assigned to all imageboard posters who do not enter a name. The movement has no formal membership, leadership, or hierarchy; instead, operations are organized ad hoc through chat rooms and forums.

From username to identity

Because all unsigned imageboard posts are attributed to 'Anonymous', users sometimes joked about Anonymous as a single, unimaginably prolific person. By the late 2000s the joke had been adopted as a deliberate collective identity for organized online activity.

Project Chanology

In January 2008, after the Church of Scientology attempted to suppress a leaked video, users coordinated through 4chan to launch Project Chanology — a campaign of denial-of-service attacks, prank calls, and in-person protests outside Scientology buildings. The protests, in which participants wore Guy Fawkes masks adapted from the film V for Vendetta, became the public face of the movement.

Later operations

Subsequent operations included Operation Payback (2010), various campaigns associated with the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street, and assorted regional actions. Several individuals associated with the movement have been arrested and prosecuted in the US, UK, and elsewhere.
